CPT Codes 99091 & 99090

The description of 99091 is COLLECT/REVIEW DATA FROM PT. Why isn't this separately billable? It involves a separate and in depth analysis of the information, reviewed with the patient. A related code, 99090, COMPUTER DATA ANALYSIS, is likewise a distince and separate service. Context: Review of daily blood sugar readings from the digital Glucometers all diabetics should have. The data needs to be reviewed to meet a minimum standard of care in this day and age.

medical decision making

According to the 1995 and 1997 Evaluation and Management Guidelines, the levels of E/M services recognize four types of medical decision making (straightforward, low complexity, moderate complexity, and high complexity). Medical decision making refers to the complexity of establishing a diagnosis and/or selecting a management option as measured by:

The number of possible diagnoses and/or the number of management options that must be considered.
The amount and/or complexity of medical records, diagnostic tests, and/or other information that must be obtained, reviewed and analyzed.
The risk of significant complications, morbidity and/or mortality, as well as comorbidities, associated with the patient's presenting problem(s), the diagnostic procedure(s) and/or the possible management options.
