CPT coding
I billed WAUSAU for two different blood tests for a work injury. The injury was a needle stick with possible exposure to infectious disease. I billed 86695 Herpes Simplex, Type 1 and 86696 Herpes simplex, 2. They paid 86695 in full but did not pay the other code stating "Procedure code or national drug code not valid for this date of service" I have this code in my 2009 CPT book. Do you know of any other code that can be used? Do you know where I can search to find the correct code?
Thank you

Sometimes WC is behind in the codes. Call and ask what year they are working off of

Herpes is not spread by needle stick- it is not a routine test to obtain after a needle stick. Hepatitis B and HIV are the standards for testing. There are specific protocols after needles sticks especially with risk of HIV transmission and the CDC should be consulted for guidelines. Extenuating circumstances may be present in this case
