explantation of ventriculoperitoneal shunt
I am trying to find the CPT® code for the explantation of the peritoneal portion of a ventriculoperitoneal shunt, can anyone help?
Thank you.
re: explantation of ventriculoperitoneal shunt
A VP shunt is a long, plastic tube that allows fluid to drain from the brain to
another part of the body. This drainage prevents the increase in pressure on
the brain caused by hydrocephalus.
A VP shunt has at least three parts. The first part is the ventricular catheter,
which goes into the brain. The second part is the valve, which controls
the pressure within the brain. The third part is the distal catheter, which is
underneath the skin and connects the other parts of the VP shunt to a space
within the body, usually the abdominal cavity (also called the peritoneal
cavity)
re: explantation of ventriculoperitoneal shunt
Our surgeon's note states that he explanted the peritoneal portion of the ventriculoperitoneal shunt, and I don't know what CPT® code to use for that, can you help me?
Thank you.

Look at code 62230
re: explantation of ventriculoperitoneal shunt
More information (procedure note) would ensure correct code. Why was it explanted?
re: explantation of ventriculoperitoneal shunt
The patient is status post a right hemicolectomy and sigmoid resection and developed a bowel perforation. It was decided because of the abdominal contamination that the peritoneal portion of the shunt should be explanted.
Thank you for your help.
re: explantation of ventriculoperitoneal shunt
You have to look at several factors. Are you in global period of initial procedure (hemicolectomy). When the catheter was explanted, was it placed elsewhere? Look to actual procedure note for accuracy, note the work involved and if no CPT® code explains this, bill unlisted code with documentation and cover letter. The I-9 codes will note the complication of surgery, should be documented, as reason for catheter explant.
