Both COPD and Bronchiectasis?

This patient has both COPD and Bronchiectasis. The tabular COPD with Bronchiectasis as J479, but J449 has Excludes1: bronchiectasis j479.

The index under J479 doesn't have an excludes 1 J44 note, but J41, j42 and j43 does. It always been if J43 is coded do not code J44.

re: Both COPD and Bronchiectasis?

If the patient has COPD, with lower acute respiratory infection, consider J44.0, in addition, you need to identify the infection or exacerbation.

J47 (and the other codes mentioned above) is an Excludes1 for COPD J44. An Excludes1 is used when two conditions cannot occur together, such as a congenital form versus an acquired form of the same condition. Therefore, you cannot code COPD with bronchitis or emphysema. The codes you mentioned are all “Chronic Lower Respiratory diseases” and cannot be coded together. Even though there is not an Excludes1 on J47.9, if you look at COPD and there is an Excludes1, you cannot code them together.
