Failed procedure

We attempted a foreign object removal from an ear, but after considerable time, we did not successfully remove the objects (bird seed). Had to refer to ENT. Can we bill for a failed procedure?

re: Failed procedure

I personally think that modifier 52 for reduced services would be better instead of modifier 53 for Discontinued procedure because he did attempt to remove the foreign body.

53 should be used if the procedure was discontinued due to extenuating circumstances or those that threaten the well being of the patient.

52 should be used if the procedure was partially reduced or eliminated at the discretion of the physician or other qualified health care professional. Under these circumstances the service and the additionof modifier 52, signifying that the service is reduced. This provides a means of reporting reduced services without disturbing the identification of the basic service.

It really depends on why this was a failed procedure and what the circumstances were.

I concur with 'ch76606'. Nice explanation, btw ;)

Although you could also bill as 'bsergi' suggests and it would be fine, I'm sure.
